‘An Episode of Gaslighting’: How Dean Phillips’s Town Hall Took an Unfortunate Turn in New Hampshire
Dean Phillips recently held his first town hall for the third congressional district of Minnesota and it didn’t go quite as planned. On the surface, the event seemed to be a success. People gathered in a high school auditorium to hear from their congressman. But as the night progressed, a different narrative began to emerge. It became apparent to many in attendance that the congressman was not there to listen to their concerns but instead was there to push his own agenda. Throughout the town hall, Phillips continuously cut off questions to move to other topics, responding to some questions with silence or a dismissive answer. At one point, a woman asked him about his position on police reform and got no response. This woman was then personally attacked by another attendee who accused her of “gaslighting” the Congressman. After that, the energy in the room shifted and many in the crowd began to grow frustrated. Phillips did not seem to be very engaged with his constituents. He read from prepared responses and lacked the ability to communicate with the audience. He was also unclear on what policies he was proposing, seemingly refusing to give answers or provide any real solutions. The meeting ended with an uncomfortable silence and disappointment after a barrage of unanswered questions. The event left a sour taste in many attendees’ mouths, making them further doubt Phillips’ ability to represent their interests. Dean Phillips’ first town hall was a window into how he plans to handle his office and interact with his constituents. His unwillingness to listen to his constituents and unwillingness to provide solutions to their concerns is a troubling sign for his re-election campaign. If he continues to dismiss their concerns and remain silent in the face of criticism, he will surely face an uphill battle in the upcoming election.
