In a major development in the fight against immigration-related policies of the Biden administration, Representative Greene of Georgia has filed a motion to impeach the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The motion, which was filed Tuesday, demands the House of Representatives “immediately review and decide whether or not to impeach” Mayorkas for high crimes and misdemeanors. The motion cites numerous examples of what Representative Greene describes as Mayorkas’ incompetence, citing the “dangerous and irresponsible border policies” that have led to the current immigration crisis on the Mexican-American border.
The congresswoman said that since Mayorkas had taken office, the number of attempted immigrants entering the United States illegally had risen dramatically, creating an overburdened situation that has resulted in an influx of unaccompanied minors into the United States. Greene also cited the leaked DHS memo that instructed Border Patrol agents to release immigrants without subjecting them to the usual health and security screenings as examples of the DHS secretary’s dereliction of duty.
In making her case to impeach Mayorkas, Rep. Greene also cited what she termed the “gross inefficiency” of the Department of Homeland Security under Mayorkas’ watch. She said the DHS has consistently failed to streamline communication and coordination among its various agencies, resulting in delays and confusion that have hampered the effectiveness of the DHS’s response to the current border crisis.
The motion faces an uphill battle to come to a vote before the end of this congressional session. But the filing of the motion makes it clear that the Biden administration’s immigration policies have drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the aisle. It also casts a spotlight on Alejandro Mayorkas — and whether he has the skills and leadership to effectively manage the complexities of responding to a massive influx of immigrants at the southern border.
