“Can We Outrun Our Fears of a Shoplifting Surge?
According to a survey, shoplifting is on the rise. Many retailers are raising alarm by suggesting that the country is on the verge of a “shoplifting surge”. But have people jumped to conclusions? Are fears of a shoplifting surge running away from facts? To answer the question, many experts have done a deep dive into the numbers. The data reveals there is indeed cause for concern. Shoplifting numbers in the United States soared from 2017 to 2019, according to statistics from the National Retail Federation. The report found that shoplifting incidents in the U.S. rose 3.5 percent, with 40 percent of shoplifting incidents taking place in big-box stores. They also revealed that the majority of shoplifting incidents, about 69 percent, are committed by individuals, and not organized gangs. While the statistics are concerning, many experts believe that the surge in shoplifting is also partly due to a low-risk environment. More and more retailers are scaling back on security, making shoplifting easier. Another contributing factor is the overall decline in retail sales. However, some experts believe that security measures can play a significant role in reducing shoplifting. This can include things like proper staffing of sales staff, better lighting, and high-tech security solutions like motion sensors and cameras. When it comes to the shoplifting surge, it seems both retailers and shoppers need to be aware of the underlying causes. Retailers needs to tighten their security measures, while shoppers need to be conscious of their actions and avoid engaging in criminal activities. Ultimately, each individual and shop owner has to do their part to ensure that all retail outlets remain safe.
