Uncovering the Mystery: Why Israel Aid is Less Popular than Ukraine Aid
More Americans than ever before are supporting foreign aid as an effective way to combat poverty and support development in low-income countries. However, the US largely overlooks Israel’s needs in terms of providing assistance. While Israel receives a relatively small amount of aid compared to other countries, the disproportionately small amount it is receiving has a negative impact on the Jewish State. Israel is the largest recipient of foreign aid from the US. The US government has committed to using nearly $3 billion dollars in assistance money for Israel annually. This is far less than other countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq receive, which receive $4 billion and $10 billion annually, respectively. It is important to note that not all of the aid money going to Israel is provided for the same purpose. Approximately $1 billion is used to assist Israeli defense. Helping to improve military readiness for the country is a smart decision as Israel is surrounded by hostile neighbors. Despite the fact that Israel has been a key ally to the US in the Middle East, and despite its need for additional aid, the amount it receives is still significantly lower than other countries. The primary reason for this is because Israel’s needs are seen as an internal issue instead of an international one. It is assumed that Israel’s need for aid is simply a reflection of its own internal economic issues, while other countries require assistance to resolve a regional or international crisis. Another reason that Israel’s aid is not as popular as other countries is because it is perceived to be a wealthy nation. This is false, as the country spends vast amounts of money to maintain its security. While Israel’s economy is much larger than many other countries, the number of citizens it needs to support is also very high. Lastly, the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel does not help Israel’s cause when it comes to garnering large amounts of aid. Many people in the US feel that the country does not deserve any additional assistance as long as the conflict in the region continues unresolved. Ultimately, the US needs to reevaluate the amount of aid that it is providing to Israel. The Jewish State requires additional aid due to its unique geopolitical situation and lengthy history of conflict. If the US does not adequately provide aid to Israel, it could potentially lead to serious consequences in the region, which few would like to see.
