The Israel-Hamas War has been an ongoing conflict for over a week now, and it has been dividing Hollywood. Several movies and television shows have been cut from projects or dropped by agents in the wake of the War.
The conflict, which began on May 10th, has resulted in over 200 deaths in Gaza and at least 10 in Israel. It has raised concerns about human rights violations, war crimes, international law, and violations of civilian rights. As a result, Hollywood heavyweights have taken action in the form of cutting certain projects or dropping representation of certain individuals.
Since the start of the conflict, Netflix has pulled an episode of hit-show Designated Survivor from their streaming service. The episode in question discussed government complicity in the kidnapping of Palestinian children. Netflix issued a statement saying that, “Given the current climate, we decided it was best to remove this episode.”
Paramount’s Israeli spy thriller Red Notice, starring Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, was also put on hold. There has been no word from the production company as to why the project had been halted.
Likewise, Variety reported that super-producer Scott Rudin had terminated the representation of Israeli Public Security Minister Amir Ohana by his talent agency. A spokesperson for the Rudin Co. issued a statement saying, “We believe in human rights and justice for all people. In light of the current situation in Israel and the West Bank, Scott Rudin Productions has informed Amir Ohana and his team that we do not wish to be associated with them in any way.”
The war is also causing some hired talent to take public stances. Gadot, who is originally from Israel, posted a public statement on Instagram condemning the violence but also reaffirming her love for her home country. “I’m sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens. Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives defending our country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas,” she wrote.
The war between Israel and the Gaza Strip is undoubtedly separating Hollywood’s moral leanings, and it will be interesting to see how and if the conflict affects future projects. It is no doubt difficult for anyone involved to maintain a neutral stance.
