As the 2022 congressional election approaches, the race for New York’s congressional District 16 seat is heating up. On Friday, January 8th, the top Democrat in Westchester County, State Assemblyman David Buchwald, filed his official paperwork to challenge incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the general election.
Since first taking office in 2019, Bowman has already made a name for himself in Washington D.C. with his progressive politics and outspoken stance on issues like student loan debt and police reform. His victory in 2020 sent shockwaves throughout the country with his resounding defeat of 16-term Democratic congressman Eliot Engel.
However, Buchwald believes the leadership of the party in District 16 needs to include a more balanced approach towards working with bipartisan initiatives in order to effectively serve its constituents.
Buchwald, a five-term Assemblyman, has slowly developed a reputation as a shrewd politician, willing to work across the aisle in order to push through effective legislation. Throughout his time in office, he has worked on causes such as improving public education, protecting the environment, and passing legislation to aid small businesses.
If elected, Buchwald has promised to fulfill a number of progressive policies while still working with Republicans as well. While he would concentrate on issues like healthcare, housing, and jobs, he would also prioritize the need to secure necessary funds to improve public services such as transportation and infrastructure in the state.
Given Buchwald’s familiarity with the local community and his species track record, many believe that he is the best-equipped candidate to steer the District 16 district towards progress. Whether he ultimately succeeds in his challenge to Rep. Jamaal Bowman or not, the race for 2022 is sure to be one of the more interesting congressional elections in recent memory.
