Earlier this week, U.S. Representative James Comer (R-KY) made a bold and controversial claim that Joe Biden was “illegally elected” as President of the United States and that the 2020 Presidential Election results should not be trusted. This statement sparked a lot of outrage among members of Democratic party as well as many civil rights organizations, who heavily oppose and challenge this unfounded and baseless argument.
While President Trump and other Republican allies continue to push a false and desperate narrative about voter fraud and irregularities in the 2020 Election, evidence does not support Comer’s claims. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the 2020 Presidential Election was “the most secure in American history” and many local and state election officials from both sides of the aisle have rejected claims of widespread voter fraud.
Furthermore, the former lead counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Benjamin Where, spoke out against these inflammatory claims made by Comer and other Republicans, saying that their assertions have been thrown around without much evidence to dispute the reported votes and final tallies. He goes on to mention that President Biden and Vice President Harris were declared the winners fairly and lawfully.
Representative Comer’s claims not only goes against the hard evidence that has been presented backing up the legitimacy of Biden’s win, it goes against the values of democracy and free and fair elections. His argument does not deserve the benefit of the doubt and should be dismissed.
