The long legal battle continues for the three Georgia poll workers whose reputations were slandered by attorney Rudy Giuliani during the 2020 election.
In early 2021, the poll workers, Daniel peeler, Tabitha Mosely, and Rhonda Martin, won a $1.48 million settlement from Giuliani for his campaign of disinformation. Giuliani had unleashed a series of false conspiracy theories about the poll workers, alleging that they conspired to steal the election for President Joe Biden.
Now, the three are suing Giuliani again, claiming that he and his associates have continued to defame them in the months since the settlement.
The new lawsuit claims that Giuliani and his associates have used their media platforms to perpetuate the lies, accusing the poll workers of “serious and egregious criminal misconduct, fraud, conspiracy, and collusion.” The suit also states that the three have suffered “distress, embarrassment, humiliation, mental anguish, and financial damage” as a result.
The suit demands a permanent injunction against Giuliani and his associates, ordering them to stop making the false claims about the poll workers. It also seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
The poll workers’ attorney, John People, said in a statement: “Our clients deserve to reclaim their good names and reputations after the false and malicious accusations leveled against them by Giuliani and his associates. We are ready to take all necessary steps to protect their rights and to hold those who attacked them responsible for their false statements.”
It is clear that the poll workers have not backed down from their battle for justice and restitution. Their case may be the first of many to come as the public grapples with the repercussions of Giuliani’s lies. It is hopefully a sign that individuals and organizations targeted by disinformation will have a chance to fight back.
