As the 2020 United States Presidential race draws ever nearer, the chasm between supporters of President Donald Trump and those of Democratic candidate Joe Biden is growing ever larger. This difference in opinion is reflected in the way supporters of the two candidates are voting, as well as what they are saying. Now, in an attempt to break through this divide, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is seeking the help of Jim Clyburn, a veteran politician and one of the most powerful African-Americans in Congress.
Clyburn believes that Biden is failing to break through the so-called ‘MAGA wall’ — the ideological and political fortress created by Trump’s supporters, who do not want to agree with what the Democratic candidate stands for. Therefore, Clyburn is warning Biden and the DCCC to look beyond the wall and reach out to those in states that are traditionally strong Republican strongholds, such as Texas and Georgia.
The need for Biden to make inroads in these states is especially important when it comes to rallying voters that traditionally lean more Republican. This is because if Biden is able to do this, he will have a far better chance of winning the popular vote — a feat which has eluded Democrats for many decades. Furthermore, if he can make inroads in these traditionally Republican states, it will help to show that a Democratic president really can reach out and successfully govern even when dealing with a traditionally red state.
In order to break through the MAGA wall and make these inroads, Clyburn believes that Biden needs to address certain issues such as jobs, healthcare, education, and racism more directly. He believes that this will be the best way for Biden to get the attention of Republican voters, especially in states wherein they usually dominate the voting.
Clyburn also believes that the DCCC needs to create a plan that will focus on advertising in these states to help bolster Biden’s chance of success. He believes that such a strategy could help counter the negative effects of the Trump administration’s policies in these states and help to paint a more favorable picture for Biden and his ultimates electoral goals.
Despite this difficult challenge, both Clyburn and the DCCC are determined to help Biden make some inroads in traditionally Republican strongholds in order to ensure that he is able to win the presidential election in November and bring about much needed change in the United States. Whether Biden will be able to succeed in breaking through the MAGA wall remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, that with Clyburn’s advice and the DCCC’s help, Biden may just have a chance.
