“Collision Course: Speaker Johnson and Mitch McConnell
Speaker Johnson and Senator Mitch McConnell have been on a collision course for a while. With the 2020 election looming and tensions rising on Capitol Hill, the two have clashed on a number of issues, from healthcare to immigration to taxes. The two have clashed publicly in the past. In February, Johnson called McConnell “unreliable” and accused the Senate Majority Leader of not doing enough to pass a bill he supported, the American Health Care Act of 2017. In August, McConnell fired back at Johnson, claiming the House Speaker had failed to come up with solutions to replace the Affordable Care Act. The recent clash has been concerning immigration reform, particularly when it comes to Dreamers. The Dreamers are a group of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children and are now protected from deportation by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Johnson is pushing for a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, but McConnell has stated that he will not consider any immigration reform bills that include a provision for a pathway to citizenship. This has caused the already intense relationship between Johnson and McConnell to reach a boiling point. The two have been exchanging barbs publicly, each accusing the other of not doing enough to pass meaningful immigration reform. While their relationship appears to be deteriorating, there is still hope that they might be able to reach a compromise. With the current political climate being what it is, it’s not impossible for them to come together and discuss a solution that is beneficial to both sides. But time will tell how this issue will be resolved.
