Since winning the Kentucky Senate Seat in 1984, Senator Mitch McConnell has become a power player in congress and on the larger US political scene. Of course, McConnell is hardly alone in the responsibility for this country’s economic struggles during this crisis. Both the Trump administration and congress have failed to work together to pass an effective relief package or hold the administration accountable for their response to the pandemic.
However, McConnell is particularly notable in the debate because of his role as Majority Leader. Daunted by a hyper-partisan environment, he has failed to prioritize the needs of Americans, instead focusing on passing appointments and judicial nominations. This includes contentious judicial appointments, such as controversial Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Through all of this, Americans have been unable to depend on the very congressmen they put in place to represent them. This is especially concerning for vulnerable communities, such as the uninsured, the uninsured, and the elderly.
This moment in history does not cry out for Mitch McConnell’s kind of politics. Instead, it calls for elected officials who are brave enough to use their power on behalf of those who can’t pay for access, and who can look past partisanship and into the interest of those that we represent. It is time for McConnell to show leadership on behalf of Americans in need, so that this country can move forward and out of this crisis.
