As the long-awaited start to Donald J. Trump’s trial date approaches, so too does the preparation of his defense team to take on New York State’s Attorney General. After numerous Supreme Court rejections of his legal cases, Trump is inarguably at a disadvantage and in a corner, though his defense team is adamant that they will counter the prosecution and come out on the other side victorious.
At a press conference on the 27th of April, Kevin Downing, the Trump defense lawyer, made his announcement that the former president’s legal team is “fully prepared to vigorously defend him with ‘solid arguments’ against what he called ‘frivolous’ accusations of fraud and civil theft from the New York Attorney General’s office”. He also noted that Trump’s defense team is in ‘full confidence’ that they will be successful and that Trump will be vindicated.
In the face of such confidence within the defense camp, the prosecution has made its own counter-arguments towards Trump and his team. It has argued that Trump abused his presidential office by using the office for personal gain, and is referring to the millions of dollars in political donations that his inaugural committee accepted and then possibly misused.
The prosecution claims that Trump not only accepted money from foreign contributors, but that Trump also attempted to influence state politics to benefit his own political campaigns and public image in a line of conduct not traditionally accepted under New York laws.
The defense has called the state’s allegations ‘baseless’ and ‘improperly sourced’. It is also challenging the attorney general’s authority in the case, saying that the allegations do not amount to even the minimum requirements of New York law.
It remains to be seen how the trial will play out, but regardless, Trump’s defense team is sure to put forward its utmost effort to defend and protect its client. With a veteran legal team and decades of experience, their confidence that Trump will be vindicated may not be without merit. It will surely be a closely watched trial here and abroad.
