After receiving her Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University in 1973, she worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., for five years. In 1982, Barry was appointed as a United States district judge for the District Court of New Jersey, where she served for 17 years. In 1999, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
