Diageo, the world’s largest alcoholic drinks company, is renewing its efforts to prevent Sean “Diddy” Combs from associating with their tequila brand. The new push comes after new rape allegations released against the media mogul surfaced.
In 2018, Diageo made the decision to not associate with Diddy’s brand Ciroc in any advertising or marketing related to their tequila brand, DeLeón. The decision was based on rumors that suggested Diddy had sexually assaulted a woman in his home at some point in the past.
Now, the rape allegations have returned in the form of a NBC News report that detailed a police report in which an anonymous woman claimed that the Bad Boy record label founder had raped her in a hotel room in 2003.
In response to the recently released report, Diageo has renewed their stance that Diddy should have no association with their tequila brand and are calling on him to refrain from using the brand in his own promotions.
A spokesman from the Diageo said in a statement, “Repeatedly associating DeLeón or any of our brands with Mr. Combs’s current circumstances is highly inappropriate and hurts the brand. We strongly urge Mr. Combs to cease all uses of DeLeón for his own promotions and ask for other parties in the music, sports and entertainment worlds to do the same. We take our responsibility to consumers and to the tequila industry seriously and hold ourselves to the highest standard of conduct.”
Diddy has denied the rape allegations, stating that the report is completely false and that he will vigorously defend himself in court.
Regardless of the outcome of the alleged assault, this news has sparked a renewed debate regarding the use of celebrities’ likenesses to promote a particular product. Many feel that companies should take a zero-tolerance policy when selecting their public figures and should take into account any potential wrongdoings when signing such agreements.
Whether or not Diageo will take action against Diddy remains to be seen, but their statement indicates that they are standing firm in their stance to not support the rapper as a representative for their tequila brand.
