As tensions continue to escalate between Israeli and Palestine, what started off as peaceful protests quickly became chaotic and a Congressman’s home was vandalized with a message calling for Gaza Cease-Fire.
Congressman Andy Levin of Michigan’s 9th District reported that on Monday night, his home in Bloomfield Township had been vandalized with graffiti reading, “Free Palestine,” and “Gaza Cease-Fire.” This is the second time since August 2019 that Congressman Levin’s home has been vanditized with messages calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.
The vandalism comes amid the increasing tensions in the Middle East, where over 120 Palestinians have died and 800 have been injured in the latest outbreak of violence. Demonstrations across the United States and around the world have been calling for an end to Israeli Defense Force’s air and ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Congressman Levin issued a statement on Tuesday in response to the vandalism, saying, “My wife and I awoke to find someone had vandalized our home, leaving a message calling for an end to the violence in Gaza. Our hearts break for the people in the region, and we understand the anguish and desperation that drive people to seek justice in this way. We are deeply disturbed by this incident and the larger context in which it takes place.”
Levin also expressed his support for peaceful demonstrations for those who want to protest in a manner that is “respectful, non-violent, and mindful of public safety.” He further added, “This incident must not detract from our pursuit of a just and lasting cease-fire that will spare both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I have consistently voted for measures supporting peace and human rights in this region.”
Vandalism is never the answer and disrespecting private property is not the way to express opinions. It is important that we continue the conversations peacefully about achieving peace in the region and use appropriate channels to voice our concerns.
