During a recent White House meeting with the President of Hungary, Viktor Orban, Donald Trump praised Orban’s “tremendous job” of running the country, going so far as to refer to him as “highly respected”. The praise given to Orban, a known authoritarian leader, drew criticism from many but it was what Trump said in regards to Vladimir Putin’s comments on the American democratic system that raised the alarm that much further.
When one of the reporters asked Trump if he would condemn Putin’s comments on American democracy made during his State of the Union address, Trump exclaimed “No, I don’t. I think that he’s been a leader much more than our president has been a leader. I think Putin has been a stronger leader in his country.”
