“U.S. Passport Processing: Pre-pandemic Speed Restored!
The U.S. State Department recently announced that they have returned to pre-pandemic passport processing times. This announcement comes as welcome news to U.S. citizens who have been waiting months for their passport applications to process and travel to begin again. The State Department had been struggling to manage a high volume of passport applications since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This influx led to longer processing times and delays in receiving passports, frustrating many people attempting to travel. However, the State Department has taken steps to address the backlog of passport applications. They opened additional passport facilities, increased the number of processors, and implemented new technology to streamline the process. As a result, most passport applications are now being processed within eight weeks. Even with these improvements, citizens should be aware that the processing time may still vary depending on the seasonality of passport requests and other external factors. For example, the State Department is not currently able to process passport applications filed abroad. To help ensure a smooth application process, citizens should also be aware of the passport requirements. According to the State Department, applicants must submit the appropriate forms, pay the fee for the application, include two photos of the applicant, and provide evidence of U.S. birth or citizenship. These documents must be submitted together with the passport application. With the new passport-processing procedures in place, U.S. citizens will be able to obtain their passports in a timely manner and begin their travel plans. This is a welcomed reprieve to many who have had to wait months due to the pandemic.
