President Trump’s re-election strategy has become an increasingly unpopular topic as Democrats and Republicans alike across the political chess game are facing off against one another in the polls. With the 2020 presidential election fast approaching, speculation for a new candidate to emerge as an alternate to Trump has grown, however, one politician is threatening to overtake any potential Trump alternative: Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
The senator has been making some rather bold assertions in recent weeks, claiming to be more aligned with Trump’s conservative agenda than the frontrunner for the GOP ticket: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Rubio informed the press over the weekend that he was more in line with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” values, going so far as to say he would “threaten to overtake DeSantis as a Trump alternative, if given the chance to spread the Republican message”:
“My message is more closely aligned to President Trump’s agenda than Ronald Desantis’s. If given the opportunity, I could have similar success to Trump in the upcoming election, and I’m more than willing to make that chance a reality,” Rubio said.
But not everyone is so excited about Rubio’s bold promises, most notably the governor’s office. Last Monday, DeSantis’ former spokesperson, Steve Stollar, responded to the Senator’s statement, claiming the governor was “the only real alternative to Trump”.
“Ronald Desantis is the only real alternative to Trump this election season and it’s been made abundantly clear that he’ll support the President’s agenda throughout the 2020 race. Rubio’s declaration doesn’t mean much in the end.”
The current state of Florida is filled with political division and uncertainty, as voters discover which candidate to cast their ballot in support of. What’s certain so far is that Rubio will have to prove himself as a viable alternative to Trump in the upcoming election – especially against the current odds-on favorite for Republican victory in 2020.
