“Rand Paul Saves Joni Ernst’s Life with Surprise Heimlich Maneuver at Lunch!
On Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was having lunch with Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) when he came to her rescue in a shocking way. Paul unexpectedly performed a Heimlich maneuver on his colleague after she began to choke on a piece of food. Paul and Ernst were dining at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington D.C. when Ernst began to choke. As soon as he noticed, Paul quickly leapt to her side and attempted to help her. Realizing that Ernst had begun to struggle, he pressed his hands into her abdomen until the obstruction had dislodged. While this sudden daring maneuver was quite unexpected, Paul is no stranger to situations of urgency. In fact, he is certified in CPR and first aid treatments, though it seems he has never had to perform a Heimlich maneuver before Monday. After the lunch venue had been cleared and the incident had been seen to, Ernst seemed to be doing well. According to a spokesperson for the Iowa senator, Ernst “appreciated the intervention and is doing well.” The spokesperson also went on to thank Paul for his quick action and concern. Fortunately, Senator Ernst had Senator Paul by her side when the event happened and he was able to put his training into action. While the incident may not have been ideal, Paul’s ability to react to the situation likely saved his colleague from suffering any further foul play. At this time, it is unclear what Rand Paul and Joni Ernst were dining on that led to this incident. However, it is certain that Senator Rand Paul’s quick action and unwavering support may have ended up saving Senator Joni Ernst’s day.
